Murray the Operation K9 Labrador has enlisted with the Royal Australian Artillery and has been posted to serve with the 16th Air Land Regiment (16 ALR) at Woodside. Sworn in with one paw on a Bible, Murray was awarded the rank of gunner, the equivalent of a private.
16 ALR will have informal access to Murray, whose role is to support the mental health and well-being of service personnel. Like all Operation K9 dogs, Murray is trained to be able to recognise and respond to heightened anxiety, depression and night tremors in his human colleagues.
Of Gunner Murrays service with 16 ALR, Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class 1 Brendan Fox reports “the benefit of just that one dog for 180 people, regardless of where they are in their life, has impacted on each and every one of them.”
