Sir Ross Smith Commemoration Service

June 15, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Royal Australian Air Force Association (SA Division) and the Royal Australian Air Force will be conducting a Commemoration Service for the passing of Sir Ross Macpherson Smith, KBE, MC and Bar, DFC and two bars, AFC on Friday 15 June at 11am at the North Road Cemetery, Nailsworth.

Sir Ross Smith, a South Australian, was one of Australia’s most decorated and distinguished military aviators and is best known for piloting a Vickers Vimy with his brother Sir Keith Macpherson Smith, supported by mechanics Wally Shiers and Jim Bennett, from England to Australia in only thirty days in 1919 and thereby winning the Great Air Race. During 2019, the History Trust of South Australia will be coordinating a Program of Events to appropriately commemorate the centenary of the remarkable flight. The Commemoration Service on 15 June 2018 is a precursor to the 2019 centenary events.

Attendees will be welcome to view a small historical display in the North Road Cemetery Chapel after the service and attend a morning tea, hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force Association, at the Combined Services Mess, Torrens Parade Ground, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.

Medals/Decorations may be worn.  Wreath laying at the service will be restricted to two invited guests.

Free parking will be available at the North Road Cemetery with cars entering the cemetery via Cemetery Avenue (off Main North Road) and at Torrens Parade Ground.

For further information, please contact the RAAF Association: raafaad@internode.on.net  or phone 08 82270980).
