MESSINES MURAL, EDWARDSTOWN SA

Messines Avenue and Mons Avenue at Edwardstown, South Australia, were named to commemorate Great War Battles. For decades an Avenue of Honour of two rows of English Elm trees on Messines Avenue has been a visible reminder of the tremendous loss, sacrifice and service.

A new mural on a building wall on the northern-side of the avenue is a visual depiction of Great War scenes and memorabilia. Thanks to the City of Marion, Plympton Glenelg RSL Sub-Branch Inc, RSL South Australia, Bone Timber and artists Nicky Create and Cold Krush Store/Gallery for their creativity, design and painting. All involved believe they have paid suitable tribute to the contribution of South Australian servicewomen and servicemen to defend the people of France and Belgium against a powerful enemy. The only identified person is nurse Sister Jane Sweeney MiD, (https://vwma.org.au/explore/people/137644) who lived locally for a while and is included on the Plympton District Roll of Honor, displayed in the Plympton Glenelg RSL and also remembered at Macclesfield .
